If you register your domain name with a domain registrar, you can get cheaper. It's well-grounded that you need to change your dns server manually (it's not difficult though).
However, if quality is your main establishment and you want to save yourself the hassle of manually changing dns server, and you don't mind paying a few bucks more for the domain name when you advertisement up with the web hosting, then I don't think you'll have a problem with Host Gator.
