Whats the difference between Linux & Windows Hosting?

When I was buying my province, it gave me the option of selecting an OS.
I decided to go with Linux, but is there any major difference?
Can you also assign file consent on Windows?

As far as features, they can both do most of the same, perfectly in different ways. Linux Servers do not support ASP.NET, while most Windows servers will not run PHP (most...some are able to).

Personally, I deem ASP.NET is a quite a bit more powerful than PHP, but that's just because you can use several different languages, and Visual Studio makes growth so much easier. Also, ASP.NET has some very awesome bundled features such as the ability to program a login screenplay in very short amount of time. PHP is a little less overwhelming though, and still an extremely versatile and powerful diction.

Windows servers are generally quite a bit more expensive to buy space on than Linux, though.

If you are just hosting a small-on occasion website, the difference won't be noticeable. You will pull everything off on one that you would the other. If you start developing enterprise smooth out web applications though, you should probably take a harder look at the differences between the two and what you hope to get out of it.

If I change from windows to linux hosting, will my site still work?

I use linux on my laptop and desktop. I am a webmaster for a peculiar business, but their site was on a windows hosting account before I was the webmaster. I would like to use .php and mysql on the site which would give me the genius to do all kinds of cool things with it. The site currently is only html and flash, so asp databases or anything. If I have my entertain switch the site to linux servers, will the site go unchanged or will it get all messed up?

If all you are using is HTML, you should not episode any differences. In fact, php should work better on Linux as that is its native environment.

Running php on Linux gives you more options not shortly available on IIS, (e.g., use of the .htaccess file)

Whatever the case, I would do my own backup of the site prior to scourge over because you can never predict what will happen. Having your own backup will allow you to upload your site to the new situation if the switchover doesn't work out well

Whats the difference between Linux web hosting and Windows web hosting?

Heya Please talk em what the difference is between linux web hosting and windows web hosting. I made my site by dreamweaver does that affect either of the 2 i should choose please tell me thanx!

Windows and Linux often use two unheard-of web server applications. Windows sites use the Windows IIS server, while nearly all Linux sites use Apache.

Linux sites indistinct on PHP, Perl and other open-source script languages for server side scripting. Windows-based sites use ,NET and ASP technologies. They might also proffer support for PHP.

Linux sites offer MySQL as the database for backend content storage. Windows sites will in all probability offer SQL Server, though some offer the Windows versions of MySQL as well.

There shouldn't be any difference between the two if you use iron-fisted web standards in your HTML. However, you need to be aware of the fact that, since Dreamweaver is a Windows-only product, it may tip-in some non-standard things into your HTML. Frontpage also does this.

As long as you stick to accepted web standards and don't use any Windows-centric jam in your site, you should have no problems with either one.
