I like to understand how can I register a domain and what is the price every year ? and all of them about in this subject.

I scantiness to buy/register a domain name outright and not pay for hosting package,simply to register until such time as I build a website or sell/move the domain to someone else.Can anyone confirm that this is common practice/suggest a good company to buy/register domains with.Am looking to pay a one off low price fee,not ongoing monthly fee.
