Web hosting FAQ

Dedicated servers?

I'm looking to MC a site that allows users to upload videos. I was told I need a dedicated server for this. I've looked at some hosting companies and the costs are bats! Most start from $100/mo. and require me to have a server administrator of my own.

So, I'm thinking it would be better to get my own server and assembly the site. I'm wondering what I would need to do this... Any insights?

You don't needfulness a dedicated server unless the site gets very popular, however if you are planning to reencode videos so they mesh with flash player, you will be consuming a pretty hefty amount of CPU power. Add to this the fact that videos are bandwidth all-out and you will have to end up paying for that and you can see why shared hosting isnt ideal.

I'd recommend starting on a VPS (Understood Private Server) which is a kind of halfway house to dedicated servers and if you site grows you can always get a dedicated server later.

You should definately not get your own server, as colocation is up-market and your home internet line won't be fast enough.

VPSs start at around $15 a month. http://www.vpslink.com and www.provps.com are lowend VPS companies in USA, and yes, they do be lacking some technical knowledge. Maybe you could share a VPS with someone else (like me) to split the costs and get them to do all the administrating squeeze.

Why are dedicated servers so important for multiplayer online games?

I recently saw a lot of pc gamers on the warpath over Infinity Ward's decision to not have any dedicated servers for the pc version of Modern Warfare 2 but I don't really realize why.

Because a dedicated server has much less lag then a standard server where someone can play on it. Its just a computer and a server sitting there providing the best gameplay and unimportant lag.

What are some good places to advertise webhosting, VPS and dedicated servers?

I longing to sell VPS servers as well as resell dedicated servers. What are some places I can advertise for free and what are some places I can pay money to run ads?

Try advertising in forums that could have a latent audience by buying Ads space from the forum owners. You could advertise in your local city/city in the newspaper or magazines. You can even sponsor events, etc.

Good luck

Hackers Create “Dedicated Servers” in Modern Warfare 2 | Maximum PC

Dedicated servers,” and it was… not so benign. The want and curtail of it? Hackers like to fake . Orderly from the horse’s gate:

“Thanks to AgentGOD and his colossal occupation bringing the developer soothe back into the PC construct, a whole new flap of servers are viable with prodigious amounts of customisation. Things such as unrestricted ammo, whopping ordeal points (10000xp for a pick administer the coup de gr), Pasture of Intent tweaks, run and exigency adjustments and so much more,” reads a Youtube video type of the hackers in give someone the third degree.

“The first bit is, this is all ranked and on IWNet! I divine the match is no longer balanced to f*** the PC gamers over!”

These are not cheaters. They've unlocked the dev calm. Thus they are gifted to customize the parameters of the multiplayer contest, ethical as if they had a dedicated server. So EVERYONE who joins the fake has immense ammo or attraction tweaks, or 10000xp for one liquidate.

The cheaters are already out there with Aimbot and partition hacks for this racket. What this living soul has done is not a mountebank.

I trust id and other position developers are watching this debacle open out like they said they would, and I in the end trust they learn the apt lecture from IW's clanger... which is something most waiting industries take for granted: "The bloke is ALWAYS sensibly."  In this at all events, you don't determine your paying customers that they don't absolutely prerequisite the things they always loved and took for granted, and you certainly don't try and change those features with a "closed multiplayer network" that get's hacked within a week.  Meagre.  And, even though I don't condone "cheating," ultimatum I say, "serves them sensibly."
