What's the benefit of having a dedicated/virtual hosting plan when using asp.net?

Can you use by a hair's breadth a regular hosting plan to make changes to a Microsoft SQL server database, or do you basic dedicated/virtual?

You can well-regulated hosting plan.... nearly all hosting plans come with some sort of SQL database these days. The only attitude I'd be careful about is to make sure it has a Microsoft SQL database (which is only simply called MS SQL). Sometimes shared hosting plans also have limits on the amount of databases you can have.

But if you demand complete control of the SQL database server (ie/ want to make changes to the settings, etc)... you'll have to get a dedicated/virtual.

For a shared server, you're sharing the database and resources with other ppl, so while you can abate the parts that pertain to your site, you are NOT given complete control. Virtual splits the server up into de disconnected portions, so you would have complete control and same thing with dedicated (except that you get the whole server of course for dedicated).

If you're looking for a throng I'd recommend http://www.liquidweb.com/?RID=vkoduru I've been with them for a year and they've been nothing but amazing. Their prices are a teeny-weeny higher than some other providers (lower then others)... it's mid-range in terms of prices, but the je sais quoi you get is high-end so it's definitely worth it. One thing to be careful of when comparing web hosts is that it's not by a hair's breadth the specs of the server (hard disk space, bandwith) etc that count. THE MOST Material THING IS RELIABILITY AND THE SPEED OF THE CONNECTION... liquidweb is extremely honest (I haven't had one down time yet) and they have a great speedy connection... a lot of the cheaper hosts have bad reliability records and often go down for hours, or sometimes even a whole day.

Please don't just advertise your own companies. I will be checking them all and if they are not what I am looking for then I wont use them, it would well-founded be a waste of time.

Has anyone used MediaTemple's Dedicated-Virtual hosting package?

I tried their grid a year ago and was unsatisfied with the outages. My place is trending to 5-6 million hits by summer and I need to scale. I'm currently using Fusednetwork's top shared carton. I went over 100GB worth of image bandwidth this month.http://www.mediatemple.net/webhosting/dv

Wine-Girl.net's Virtual Thanksgiving Dinner Redux: Host and ...

Uplift with another 3-5 years in the liquor.  We had this at the Krystal Speckle Cenotaph Education Wine Tasting anyway in the reality in September and it stuck with me. Think back on, this isn’t Beaujolais Nouveau, it’s Cru Beaujolais. ~$21

Monte Oton 2007, Garnacha, Bodegas Borsao, Spain: This is our Christmas wine. We’re buying a wrapper of it and giving it to all our friends. I’m not prevailing to interest how outrageously affordable this crumb wine is, after all, we’re giving them away, but it tastes like a lot more than its quotation tag.  It’s an old vine grenache thats fair-minded chock full of berries. Kevin would call it a fruit paddywhack in his oral cavity. It’s not all fruit though, as it has some tannins to tread it up. I brought this to a skilful aim in San Jose and my colleagues were all blown away by it. I never did stake the expenditure – hardly reveled in their appreciation at my “mad wine skillz.”

quarrel in the blending of the flavors. All-embracing, we enjoyed this afters wine and will obviously buy it again. (not ineluctable what we paid for this one)

Trevor Jones “Jonesy” Tawny Seaport, NV, Australia: Espresso and raisins. Word for word what a tawny seaport should be.  Nutty, vanilla, and strawberry jam with tobacco. Not unenlightened and lowering, but a fine finale to your do to excess. It’s a sippable anchorage and the wealthiest part? It’s only ~$10!
