Will a VPS Web Hosting company fill my needs?

After a year and a half of hosting a CGI based database purlieus with a shared hosting company, resulting in occasional server overloads and web purlieus shutdowns, it's obvious that I need to change my hosting plan. My former hosting Pty says that the CGI scripts are causing the overloads. Would a VPS hosting plan be a good option for me? Does anyone know any good, reliable VPS hosting companies?

Why does shared web hosting offer unlimited bandwidth but dedicated servers or VPS hosting does not?

Right-minded curious why you don't get unlimited data transfer if you're paying A LOT more for a dedicated server or practical private server.

shared hosting providers chiefly have their servers on an unmetered line, which will be shared among their many clients. You could get an unmetered line for your dedicated/VPS, but it would outlay you a real lot.

I have a VPS Server which I use for web hosting, I would like to setup a agent server for my own personal use. It does not need to strip out my original IP address or consent to SSL although it would be a plus.

However, it MUST be private so that only I can use it.

What are the best software and how would I go in setting this up?
